BRAHMA – first quarter of the tenth century, Cambodia. Sandstone. H. 47 ½ in. (120.7 cm); W. 21 in. (53.3 cm); D. 9 in. (22.9 cm).
Curatorial Record:
This representation of Brahma [Hindu tradition god of creation] is understood to be omnipresent.  Hence he is depicted with four faces and four arms, evoking his universality.
This sculpture would have occupied a subsidiary shrine at a temple complex dedicated in all likelihood to Shiva [the master of both poison and medicine].

The United Nations said Saturday [October 25] that 50 countries have ratified a U.N. treaty banning nuclear weapons, paving the way for its entry into force on Jan 22, a move praised by anti-nuclear activists but opposed by the United States and other nuclear powers.

Japan decided not to sign the treaty in consideration of its security ties with the United States.

Staff • The Canadian Press (16 October 2020)

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday said his government will not stop standing up for human rights in China –or calling-out Beijing for its coercive approach to diplomacy.
Trudeau says that includes the situation in Hong Kong, where pro-democracy activists have been protesting a widely criticized national security law imposed on the territory by Beijing.
On Thursday [15 October], the Chinese ambassador to Canada warned Ottawa against granting asylum to Hong Kong residents fleeing the situation, saying it amounts to interfering in its internal affairs.

Trudeau has said that China is engaging in coercive diplomacy by imprisoning two Canadian men in retaliation for the arrest of a Chinese high-tech executive on an American extradition warrant.

China has built nearly 400 internment camps in Xinjiang region, with construction on dozens continuing over the last two years even as Chinese authorities said their “re-education” system was winding down, an Australian thinktank has found.

The network of camps in China’s far west, used to detain Ughurs and people from other Muslim minorities, include 14 that are still under construction, according to the latest satellite imaging obtained by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

Curatorial Record:

The blood-red body and flaming halo of Aizen Myo-o, the Wisdom King of Passion, symbolizes how, in Buddhist practice, the violent energies of carnality and desire can be converted in the pursuit of enlightenment. Aizen Myo-o is the embodiment of rage: his hair stands on end, a snarling lion rises from his head, and his six arms brandish Esoteric weapons and other emblems of power. The bow and arrow on the middle hands are attributes appropriated from Kama, the Hindu god of love.

Russia’s apparent test-firing of an anti-satellite weapon in outer space on July 15 [2020], as alleged by the US and Britain, could be dismissed as another of Vladimir Putin’s annoying provocations. That would be a mistake. The alleged new space weapon should be seen in the broader context of a rapidly evolving, hi-tech, high-risk international arms race involving all the major nuclear powers that, largely undiscussed, is spinning out of control.

The Hell Courtesan derives from legends of a 15th century woman who dressed in robes decorated with images of the Buddhist hells. Yamantaka, Destroyer of Death — Tibet, early 18th century. Distemper on cloth. Image: 72¹½ x 46⅝ in. (184.2 x 118.4 cm). The Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Curatorial Record:

This image of a wrathful protector of Buddhism would have been an awesome presence in the dimly lit interior of a Tibetan monastery. Yamantaka is a violent aspect of the Bodhisattva Manjushri; who assumes the form to vanquish Yama, the god of death. By defeating Yama, the cycle of rebirths (samsara) that prevents enlightenment is broken.

Due to his involvement in public protests against the Chinese Communist Party’s  police state presence in his native Tibet, the poet Theurang was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to a four-year prison term. Prior to being incarcerated, his critical attacks on the CCP included publications of his poetry in the now-banned literary journal ‘Eastern Conch Moutain’.

His prison sentence violated article 19 of the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which calls for the protection of freedom of expression. China signed the ICCPR in 1998.

The poem presented below was written during the poet’s period of incarceration (2010-2014).

THOSE PEOPLE

Theurang [Tashi Rabten]

Mountains hollowed out, rivers befouled And wildlife wiped out.
Those people burrow our land
With their fangs and claws.

Pastures denuded, forests demolished.
Boundaries of fields and pens dissolved,
Converted into extensive spaces of foreign, unhealthy trees.
Those “guests” have now settled, unapologetically.

Rangelands divided, fenced with iron enclosures.
Livestock disturbed, and its population dwindling.
With fierce expressions, they snatch away slabs of our gold ores
And with unblushing smiles, they reward us with a few sacks of flour.
Those people really know how to ingratiate themselves.

Law. Policy. Harmony.

Those people have chains, locks
And awfully tight snares.
