TOKYO — Japan’s Defence Ministry seeks ¥5.48 trillion budget amid China worries Japan’s Defense Ministry on Tuesday [31 August] asked for a 2.6% increase over the year’s record budget as it seeks to further strengthen the country’s military in the face of China’s growing assertiveness in the region. . . . Beijing’s growing tension with Taiwan and rivalry with the United States, were specifically noted in this year’s defense report adopted in July.

‘WarintheWoods’: hundreds of anti-logging protestors arrested in Canada
Police in Western Canada have arrested more than 270 people, as a conflict over old growth logging in British Columbia’s ancient rainforest continues to grow.
At the protest blockades [near the Fairy Creek watershed on Southern Vancouver Island], hundreds of activists have been chaining themselves for days or more at a time, and even securing their arms inside devices called “sleeping dragons” cemented into the roadway.
The movement is an attempt to pressure the British Columbia government to halt the cutting of what activists and experts say is the last 3% of ancient trees in the province.

White-RobedKannon. Hanging scroll – ink on silk. Japan, 14th century. The Metropolitan Museum, New York.
Curatorial Record:
Avalokiteshvara, or Kannon in Japanese, one of the most important bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism, was traditionally venerated in Zen more as a model for the contemplative life than for his role as savior. This approach is reflected in the iconographic mode most favored in Zen, the white-robed Kannon. A more human image of the deity, she relaxes here near a waterfall in a woodland setting. The inclusion of Sudhana (lower right), the archetypal pilgrim youth who sought the bodhisattva in Potalaka, his island paradise, reflects Zen assimilation of Pure Land belief.
●
Kannon is called Seer of Sounds of the World because she attained enlightenment by way of sound.

The monkey is reaching for the moon in the water.
Until death overtakes him he’ll never give up.
If he’d let go the branch and disappear in the deep pool,
The whole world would shine with dazzling pureness.

(1968) The more our daily life appears standardized, stereotyped, and subject to an accelerated reproduction of objects of consumption, the more art must be injected into it in order to extract from it that little difference which plays simultaneously between other levels of repetition, and even in order to make the two extremes resonate – namely, the habitual series of consumption and the instinctual series of destruction and death.

Light from Behind a Black Hole spotted for lst time BenTurner (Staff Writer), Live Science, 29 July 2021
● Astronomers have detected light coming from behind a black hole, for the first time, proving Einstein right, yet again.
Researchers were studying the X-rays flaring from a supermassive black hole in the center of the spiral galaxy, Zwicky 1,800 million light-years away, when they discovered the unexpected phenomenon. Alongside the expected X-ray flashes from the black hole, the scientists also detected a number of “luminous echoes” from an origin they initially couldn’t place. The researchers soon realized that the echoes were arriving from behind the supermassive black hole, which, true to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, was warping space-time—enabling the light to travel around the black hole. Einstein’s theory of general relativity describes how massive objects can warp the fabric of the universe, called space-time. Gravity, Einstein discovered, isn’t produced by unseen force, but is simply our experience of space-time distorting in the presence of matter and energy. ________________________________________

The time-being has the quality of flowing. So-called today flows into tomorrow, today flows into yesterday, yesterday flows into today. And today flows into today….

ChinahasalreadywonAsia’sarmsrace
There has been much chatter over recent years about an Asian arms race triggered by China’s military expenditure. This, it is argued, is reflected in increased defense budgets and new equipment programs announced by a number of Asian countries.
But one of the oddities of Asian geopolitics is that, if China’s neighbors are fearful of its growing hard power capabilities, there is little evidence of their responses. As China’s People’s Liberation Army has become more advanced and capable, many neighboring militaries have stagnated. If there is a regional arms race, it has few participants and China has won before the starting gun has even been fired.
…
Much of the [Asian] region remains reliant upon the U.S. for military cover. But this is a strategy with risks. Not only is there a degree of uncertainty about the U.S ‘s long-term commitment to its regional partners, but the days of American military superiority over China are nearing the end.
…
If China’s neighbors willingly accept China’s military supremacy, then so may the world’s more distant powers.

Millions of Chinese Youth “volunteers” to be sent to villages in echo of Maoist policy
AgenceFrance-Presse, 12 April 2019
China is planning to send millions of youth “volunteers” back to villages, raising fears of a return to the methods of Chairman Mao’s brutal Cultural Revolution [1966-76].
The Communist Youth League (CYL) has promised to dispatch more than 10 million students to “rural zones” by 2022 in order to “increase their skills, spread civilization and promote science and technology”, according to a Communist party document.
Former revolutionary bases, zones suffering from extreme poverty, and ethnic community areas will receive top priority according to the CYC.

‘Historicmoment’: Legal experts unveil new definition of ecocide
Aftersixmonths of deliberation, a team of international lawyers has unveiled a new legal definition of “ecocide” that, if adopted, would put environmental destruction on a par with war crimes – paving the way for the prosecution of world leaders and corporate chiefs for the worst attacks on nature.
…
Its authors want the members of the International Criminal Court [ICC – The Hague, Netherlands] to endorse it and hold big polluters to account in a bid to halt the unbridled destruction of the world’s ecosystems.
“It’s a question of survival for our planet,” said Dior Fall Sow, a UN jurist and former prosecutor who chaired the panel.
Even if you have not awakened, if you realize that your perceptions and activities are all like dreams and you view them with detachment, not giving rise to grasping and rejecting discrimination, then this is virtually tantamount to awakening from the dream.

If We Don’t Protect 30% of the Natural World by 2030, Earth May be Unfit for Life
ReynardLoki, Independent Media Institute (New York)
May 24, 2021
The natural world is in crisis, and we are to blame. … Our fellow Earthlings are being overhauled, overfished, and overharvested for food, clothing, and medicines. And the ones that we don’t kill are losing their homes as we destroy the natural habitat to make space for our farms and cities and to extract fuels, minerals, timber and other resources for human society. And the habitats that we don’t completely eradicate we pollute with a vast array of elements from pesticides and plastics to carbon dioxide, fracking chemicals and invasive species. We are even polluting wildlife habitats with our light and noise.

There is a reality even prior to heaven and earth;
Indeed, it has no form, much less name;
Eyes fail to see it; It has no voice for ears to detect;
To call it Mind or Buddha violates its nature,
For it then becomes like a visionary flower in the air;
It is not Mind, nor Buddha;
Absolutely quiet, and yet illuminating in a mysterious way,
It allows itself to be perceived only by the clear-eyed.

Addressing a high-level dialogue on desertification, land degradation and drought, Volkar Bozkir [UN General Assembly President] described restoring nature as “the test of our generation”, outlining the cost of inaction.
“Our planet is facing an environmental crisis that encompasses every aspect of the natural world: land, climate, and biodiversity, and pollution on land and at sea,” he said.
Our existence and ability to thrive in this world is entirely dependent on how we reset and rebuild our relationship with the natural world, including the health of our land.
…
Restoring nature is the test of our generation and indeed of this multilateral institution. This is the challenge the UN was born to meet,” he stated.
